"Stress in Teens: Spotting the Signs and Providing Support"

Recognising stress, anxiety, and depression in teenagers is crucial to their mental and physical well-being. Research studies have shown that chronic and severe symptoms can impact their academic performance, relationships, and overall quality of life (Friedberg & McClure, 2017; Murdock et al., 2020). As parents, guardians, teachers, or mentors, it is essential to be aware of the signs and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in teenagers.

According to a study by Lewinsohn et al. (2018), changes in behaviour such as withdrawal from activities or social situations, irritability, aggression, or outbursts are potential signs of stress, anxiety, or depression in teenagers. Changes in mood such as persistent sadness, hopelessness, guilt, or worthlessness may also be indicators of depression (Costello et al., 2017). In addition, changes in sleep patterns and appetite, as well as unexplained physical symptoms like headaches, stomach aches, and fatigue, are potential signs of stress, anxiety, or depression in teenagers (Esmaelzadeh et al., 2021).

To manage these symptoms and prevent their escalation, it is crucial to encourage healthy habits such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, and spending time outdoors (Brennan et al., 2021). Creating a supportive and open environment where teenagers feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings can also be beneficial (McCabe et al., 2021). Seeking professional help from a therapist or counsellor is another important strategy for managing stress, anxiety, and depression in teenagers (Mian et al., 2020). Finally, providing a safe and nurturing environment at home, school, or other settings where teenagers spend time is essential (Clark et al., 2019).

In conclusion, recognising the signs and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in teenagers is crucial for their overall well-being. Encouraging healthy habits, fostering open communication, seeking professional help, and providing a safe and nurturing environment are strategies that can help manage these symptoms and prevent long-term negative effects.
